Coping with premature ejaculation is never easy. Many men think it will just go away on its own so, by the time they begin to look for help, many want immediate results. Unfortunately, effective treatments often take time and have to do with various lifestyle changes or seeking therapy if the problem is rooted in stress or anxiety. Recent medical advancements have had people talking about a possible pharmaceutical treatment. Have men finally found the magic pill?
Pharmaceutical options for Premature Ejaculation
There have been some pharmaceutical options for the treatment of premature or early ejaculation for a number of years. Initially, some anti-depressants and various topical creams were prescribed in order to treat the condition. Though these drugs were not developed with the expressed aim of treating early ejaculation, they were able to be used off-label with some success. Many popular antidepressants worked as serotonin re-uptake inhibitors which resulted in delayed orgasms. Results occurred in about 10-14 days and didn’t always had to be taken every day. Unfortunately, other side effects of these antidepressants included nausea, dry mouth and, ironically, decreased libido. Topical creams that contained lidocaine or prilocaine were used in order to dull the sensitivity of the penis. While this would work effectively to delay orgasm, it obviously all reduced the amount of pleasure many men were able to have during sex. As a result, these pharmaceutical options were often only used in extreme cases and only once all natural options had been exhausted.
In 2003, Johnson & Johnson made headlines when they introduced Dapoxetine, which they sold under the name Priligy. Priligy was the first drug introduced to treat Premature Ejaculation. Priligy works in a similar fashion to anti-depressants and inhibits the uptake of serotonin, thus delaying orgasm. As a serotonin inhibitor, the drug does share some of the side effects of antidepressants, including dizziness and insomnia. This specific formulation, however, does not include the problem of decreased libido or other sexual dysfunctions. As of 2013, Priligy is being successfully sold in Europe, Asia and Mexico and is in Phase III Development for sale in the United States.
More recently, extensive coverage of the topical medication Promescent has sparked a renewed interest in premature ejaculation and various treatments for it. Promescent was originally developed in 2009 but recently became the focus of several international articles, including pieces with CNBC and the Daily Mail. Currently, it is available as an over the counter medication and has been received well. In many cases, it has become the choice for a first line treatment for men suffering with chronic early ejaculation.
Better Living Through Chemistry?
With half a dozen new drugs on the horizon, many people think they can easily pop a pill or use a spray in order to conquer their problems with premature ejaculation quickly, easily and immediately. However, as with any medication, every chemical option carries with it a host of potential side effects. Although some of these side effects are worth it for men who have struggled with these issues for years, that doesn’t mean it should be the first line of treatment for everyone.
While the popularity of these drugs has already spawned several other pharmaceutical options, many doctors suggest patients stick to natural methods first. Although it can take longer for these other methods to produce results, the chances of them being successful are greater and they don’t carry the risk of various side effects. More importantly, natural methods to remedy the situation often result in greater overall health and well being. Employing healthier diet choices, increasing physical activity and seeking to reduce stress all effectively treat premature ejaculation for many men and can, at the same time, help to reduce problems associated with depression, joint pain, diabetes and a host of other conditions. Nevertheless, for men who have struggled with premature ejaculation for years while exhausting every other option, these new drugs may be the key to finally taking control of their sex lives once again.
